Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), unleashed a stinging attack on former Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday as she campaigned for BJP defector Jagadish Shettar in poll-bound Karnataka.
Addressing a rally in Hubbali, Owaisi questioned the Congress’ philosophy and stated that he had not expected Sonia Gandhi to campaign for a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) candidate.
“Does this is your secularism?” Is this how you want to fight Modi?” the AIMIM MP asked.
“Madam Sonia Gandhi ji, mujhe aapse ye ummeed nahi thi ki aap ek RSS ke aadmi ke liye campaign karne aayengi, Jagadish Shettar toh RSS se hai, (I didn’t expect you to campaign for an RSS man, Jagadish Shettar is from the RSS, Madam Sonia Gandhi ji),” Owaisi stated.
“It is a shame that Congress failed in the ideological battle.” And their jokers, minions, and slaves charge me,” he said, referring to the allegations that he is a Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) B-team member.
The Congress has fielded Jagadish Shettar from the Hubbali-Dharwad Central constituency, which he won on a BJP ticket in the last assembly.
The grand old party has defended Shettar’s entry, arguing that the former Karnataka chief minister is a “secular person” despite his RSS ties.
Sonia Gandhi conducted her first rally in three years on Saturday, flanked on stage by Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Jagadish Shettar. She slammed the BJP for fostering “hatred.”
“Neither Karnataka nor India can progress unless the atmosphere of the BJP’s loot, lies, ego, and hatred is removed,” Gandhi said at her 1st public rally in the state, which votes on May 10.
The former Congress president states, “It is everyone’s responsibility to strengthen our voice against this (BJP) government’s dark rule.”
