Parul University: Police Probe Rector for Alleged Cryptocurrency

The police have initiated an investigation against the rector of a hostel on the Parul University campus. In collaboration with a student, the rector allegedly defrauded the university of Rs 31.9 lakh through cryptocurrency trading.

Details of the FIR on Parul University:

The FIR, lodged at Waghodia police station on July 9, is based on a complaint filed by university employee Aashusinh Rajput. It states that rector Pawan Babulal Tanwar misled students into transferring their hostel fees of Rs 96,000 each to his private account.

Tanwar, a native of Bhiwani in Haryana and appointed rector of floors B 5 and 6 of the Sardar Bhavan hostel, allegedly conspired with student Manthan Govind Gohil, a native of Gir Somnath, to use the collected fees for cryptocurrency trading.

Allegations in the Complaint on Parul University:

Rajput’s complaint indicates that despite knowing he was supposed to deposit the hostel fees into the university’s account, Tanwar persuaded 47 students to deposit the fees into his private bank account between February 27 and July 7, 2024. A significant portion of this money was then transferred to Gohil’s bank account and used for cryptocurrency trading.

The swindled amount, totaling approximately Rs 31.9 lakh, was discovered during a management inquiry into the hostel accommodation fees, which did not appear in the university’s records. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Tanwar had allegedly transferred large sums to Gohil, who engaged in cryptocurrency trading.

Legal Action:

The FIR has been lodged under sections 408 (criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 114 (abettor present when the crime is committed) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The alleged offense occurred between February 27 and June 30, when the IPC was in force in the country.
