Perryton tornado: A lethal tornado has swept through a northern Texas town, killing three people and injuring many more.

Around the Oklahoma border, Perryton is in the middle of an intense storm system that has made its way through the South.

Surrounding places are sending emergency units to help the town, home to nearly 8,000 people. At least 30 mobile houses took a “direct hit” from the tornado and were damaged or ruined, said a local fire officer.

A further 75 people were rushed to hospital, added Perryton Fire Chief Paul Dutcher. A representative for Ochiltree General Hospital told ABC News they are working on generators amid widespread power outages.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the tornado touched down on Thursday at 17:00 local time (23:00 BST). It is said a total of seven tornado reports but said the threat of further intense storms over the following few days would reduce.

On Friday, storms across areas of Oklahoma and Kansas and in parts of Arkansas, Mississippi and west Florida could get significant rain, damaging winds gusts and several tornadoes.

By Saturday, that threat will mainly be centred over the Southern Plains before reducing into Sunday.

Approximately 247,000 customers were without power in Texas and Oklahoma as of Friday morning due to Perryton tornado, according to the Poweroutage.us website.
