PM Modi Tries Sarvam Kaze: India’s AI Glasses Rival

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history as the first person to try Sarvam Kaze, India’s innovative AI-powered glasses, during the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The homegrown startup Sarvam unveiled the sleek device, which is set to debut in May, marking a significant step in India’s AI landscape. In a social media post, Sarvam founder Pratyutsh Kumar highlighted Modi’s interaction, noting, “The first person to try them? The Prime Minister.” The event coincided with Modi inaugurating the India AI Expo, where he engaged with cutting-edge technologies.

Sarvam Kaze positions itself as a direct competitor to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, aiming to bring AI intelligence from screens into the real world. Designed and built in India, the glasses listen, understand, respond, and capture real-world interactions, allowing users to create custom experiences via the Sarvam platform. This wearable device taps into the growing smart eyewear market, with Reliance Jio also entering the space.

AI Innovation and Edge Technology
At the core of Sarvam Kaze is Sarvam Edge AI, which runs locally on devices for instant responses, enhanced privacy, and offline functionality without cloud reliance. As Kumar explained, “Responses are instant. There’s no round trip to a data center… The model is already there, ready to run the moment you need it.” This edge computing approach ensures faster performance and data security, aligning with India’s push for sovereign AI models.

Government Backing and Future Outlook
Sarvam is among 12 organizations tasked by the Indian government to develop AI models using local datasets. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of sovereign AI during the summit, stating, “Sovereign models have been launched here. You can go and see how they stand on global parameters.” Under AI Mission 2.0, the government plans to build large-scale infrastructure to elevate India’s AI capabilities. With Sarvam Kaze’s May launch, the product promises to democratize AI access, blending innovation with national pride.
