PM Modi Conferred Ghana’s Top Civilian Honour for Global Leadership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Thursday conferred with Ghana’s highest national honour — The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and impactful global leadership. The honour was presented by President John Dramani Mahama during PM Modi’s historic state visit to the West African nation.

The visit marks the first time in over three decades that an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to Ghana, highlighting the growing importance of India’s engagement with Africa.

Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’.” In his acceptance remarks, Modi said the award was not just a personal accolade but a recognition of the 140 crore people of India. He dedicated the honour to India’s youth, its diverse cultural legacy, and the ever-strengthening ties between India and Ghana.

“This award reflects the warmth and friendship that our nations share,” Modi said, adding that it also places a renewed responsibility on him to further deepen the bilateral relationship.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the recognition as a testament to the robust and growing ties between the two democracies. It also highlighted the shared values, including democratic principles and cooperation on global platforms, as central pillars of the India-Ghana partnership.

During the day, PM Modi and President Mahama held extensive talks covering a wide range of areas including trade, defence cooperation, capacity building, digital innovation, and climate change. Both leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.

Modi’s visit to Ghana is part of his larger five-nation Africa tour, aimed at enhancing India’s outreach and collaboration with African countries. It is seen as a strategic move to deepen South-South cooperation and boost economic ties.

India has long maintained development partnerships with Ghana in sectors such as education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and IT. PM Modi noted that India would continue to support Ghana’s development goals through enhanced investment, technology sharing, and people-to-people ties.

Modi also interacted with the Indian diaspora in Ghana, commending their role in fostering goodwill between the two nations.

In conclusion, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a stronger, future-focused partnership with Ghana. “This visit is a historic step towards unlocking new opportunities between our nations,” he said.

The conferring of Ghana’s highest civilian honour on Modi not only cements diplomatic goodwill but also marks a symbolic leap forward in India’s diplomatic engagement with Africa.
