President Joe Biden mentions Uyghur in his Ramadan wish

During the holy month of Ramadan, President Joe Biden sent a letter to Muslims all across the world expressing “solidarity” with China’s persecuted Uyghur minority.

According to a statement from President Joe Biden, “With our partners, the USA stands in solidarity with Muslims who continue to face injustice, such as Uyghur in the People’s Republic of China, Burma’s Rohingya, as well as other Muslim communities facing persecution across the world.

About the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria as well as the floods in Pakistan, Biden said that the United States “also reaffirms our asset to Muslim communities suffering hardships and devastation” during this solemn time of reflection.

“We remember the universal human right to practice, pray, and aslo to preach our faiths in peace and public today especially,” the statement reads.

At a period of high tension between Washington and Beijing, Biden brought up the Uyghurs, who the US administration claims are being subjected to genocide by the communist authorities in China.

Rights groups claim that Uyghurs are imprisoned in huge numbers in camps for forced labour and are not allowed to practice their culture.

Beijing claims that any security measures in their northwest region of Xinjiang respond to a threat from terrorism and that the ethnic minority is not being persecuted.
