According to the legend of the birth of Lord Dattatreya
, once Mother Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati became very proud of their husband’s vow. Naradaji went to the three goddesses, in turn, to break their pride and began to praise Goddess Anasuya’s pativrata dharma. Due to the stubbornness of the jealous goddesses, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh arrived to break Anasuyaji’s vow. Goddess Anasuya knew their preferences by her pativrata dharma and sprinkled the water of sage Atri’s feet on the three gods, turning them into children.
Devi Anasuya wrapped him in a cradle and began nurturing him with love and affection. After repenting their mistake, the trio sought forgiveness from Goddess Anasuya. Mother Anasuya said that these three had drunk my milk, so they had to remain in child form. On hearing this, the three devas took their respective parts and created a new one named Dattatreya.
