The rising price of Tomatoes is a matter of concern for buyers, as it’s getting costlier day by day; on the other hand, we have a story of farmer became Crorepati.

Despite the country’s rising tomato costs, a farmer from Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district sold 40,000 boxes of tomatoes in 45 days, resulting in an outstanding income of 4 crore.

In the early weeks of April, Chandramouli, a tomato farmer with a 22-acre field, wanted to produce a rare species of tomato plant known as ‘Sahu’.

He increased productivity by using advanced farming techniques such as mulching and micro-irrigation. His efforts paid off, and by the end of June, he had a bumper crop of tomatoes.

That’s how a farmer became Crorepati:

Chandramouli sold his tomato output in the last 45 days at the neighbouring Kolar market in Karnataka, conveniently located near his hometown.

During this time, the cost of a 15-kilogramme crate of tomatoes ranged between $1,000 and $1,500. Surprisingly, he managed to sell 40,000 boxes of tomatoes in this time frame.

NCCF and NAFED on rising price:

In response to a significant increase in tomato prices across the country, the organisations NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) took action by initiating tomato procurement from mandis (wholesale markets) in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

The purpose was to send these tomatoes simultaneously to key consuming centres where retail prices had increased the most in the previous month.
