West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared a ban on Sudipto Sen’s movie The Kerala Story on Monday. Since the publication of the trailer, the film has sparked debate.
The trailer was panned for saying that 32,000 ladies from Kerala went missing and ultimately joined the terrorist outfit ISIS.
According to ANI, Mamata Banerjee stated, “The West Bengal govt has decided to ban the movie The Kerala Story.” This is to avoid any incidents of hatred and violence and to keep the state peaceful.”
“What are the Kashmir files?” she added. Its purpose is to humiliate one group. What exactly is the Kerala story?… It’s a twisted story.”
Vipul Shah, a film producer, responded to the judgement by saying, “If that is what she has done, we will take legal action.” We will fight for whatever is permissible under the law.”
The Kerala Story was just removed from Tamil Nadu theatres. M Subramaniam, President of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, confirmed the decision and also told news agency PTI, “The film was only shown in a limited multiplex owned by pan-India groups, mostly PVR.”
Locally owned multiplexes have opted not to screen the picture since it lacked popular stars. In Coimbatore, for example, there have been two events, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Even they didn’t fare well. Given that, cinemas felt it was not worth the risk of protests and the like.”
Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, Adah Sharma, and Sonia Balani play the main role in The Kerala Story.
The film, directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, sparked a significant political uproar, with many considering it a propaganda piece.
Previously, the Kerala High Court stated that the makers included a disclaimer with the video expressing that the film is a fictionalised and dramatised rendition of events.
It was also stated that the video makes no claims about the accuracy or veracity of historical events.
While many people wanted the video banned, the HC refused to impose a stay of execution.
On the 3rd day of its release, the film grossed Rs. 16 crores at the Indian box office.
This brings their overall earnings to more than 35 million since its introduction on May 5.
