Jayasuriya Credits Indian Coaches for Sri Lanka’s T20 Triumph

Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has praised two former Indian national coaches for their crucial role in the team’s dominant eight-wicket victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup 2026, pushing the Aussies to the brink of elimination. Fielding coach R. Sridhar and batting coach Vikram Rathour were highlighted for their professionalism, IPL insights, and ability to boost team confidence, contributing to Sri Lanka’s undefeated streak.

The Indian duo has integrated seamlessly, providing composure in high-pressure situations and empowering the batting unit against top-class attacks. Jayasuriya noted, “R Sridhar is our fielding coach, he’s from India, and also Vikram (Rathour) is our batting coach. Both are really good gentlemen. They do whatever we want to do at practice, which is really good for fielding. With his IPL experience, he’s working with the players really well and gelling well. We have given a lot of confidence to the batters.”

Tactical Brilliance in the Match

The Pallekele encounter showcased Sri Lanka’s tactical adaptability. After Australia’s openers threatened a big total, bowlers employed a “pace-off” strategy to regain control, maximizing the gripping wicket. Despite losing key pacer Matheesha Pathirana to injury early, spinners like Maheesh Theekshana stepped up, bowling effectively to restrict the Aussies to 141/9. Jayasuriya explained, “We wanted to send the message to vary the pace and slow it down as much as possible… The bowlers did a great job.”

Injury Concerns Loom

Amid celebrations, injury worries persist. With captain Wanindu Hasaranga sidelined, Pathirana’s fitness is critical. Ahead of the final group game against Zimbabwe, cautious rotation is planned to preserve players for the Super 8 stage, where Sri Lanka aims for a second T20 World Cup title. Rathour and Sridhar’s experience will guide this strategy.
