Officials said a business jet was forced to divert to Bradley International Airport in Connecticut after being buffeted by heavy turbulence over New England on Saturday. The incident resulted in the uncommon passenger death.

As per Sarah Sulick, a National Transportation Safety Board representative, five people were on board the Bombardier executive jet when it was shaken by turbulence late on Friday afternoon while en route from Keene, New Hampshire, to Leesburg, Virginia.

The degree of the aircraft’s damage was unclear, and also the NTSB withheld information such as the victim’s seatbelt usage.

A Federal Aviation Administration database showed that Conexon, a Kansas City, Missouri-based firm, owns the jet. The provider of high-speed internet in rural areas declined to comment on Saturday.

According to Sulick, NTSB investigators were interviewing the 2 crew members as well as surviving passengers as part of an investigation into the deadly encounter with turbulence.

She stated that the cockpit voice, as well as data recorders, were sent to NTSB headquarters for analysis.

Despite advancements in airline safety over the years, turbulence, which is unstable air in the sky, continues to be a risk factor for passenger injuries.

Early this week, a Lufthansa Airbus A330 encountered turbulence while flying from Texas to Germany, inflicting seven injuries severe enough to require hospital transfer. The aircraft was rerouted to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

Yet deaths are incredibly rare.

“I can’t recall the last fatality caused by turbulence,” says Robert Sumwalt, former NTSB chair and executive director of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Center for Aviation as well as Aerospace Safety.

The NTSB discovered that turbulence was a factor in more than a third of incidents involving larger commercial aircraft between 2009 and 2018.
