Iyer Becomes First Indian Captain Winless in Opening Three T20Is

Shreyas Iyer’s start to life as India’s T20I captain has turned into a statistical low point rather than a launchpad. India’s tour began with a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland, a surprise result that saw the hosts edge out a tight second game by a single run after winning the opener by 34. The tone was set early, and the challenges did not ease once India moved into their five-match series against England.

A Rain-Hit Opener and a Costly Chase

The first T20I against England failed to produce a result at all, washed out by rain before any real cricket could be played. That left the second match as India’s next chance to open their account under Iyer, but the outing ended in more disappointment. England chased down India’s total with four wickets in hand, extending Iyer’s wait for a maiden win as captain. With this defeat, he became the first Indian captain to go without a victory in his first three completed T20I matches — an unwanted piece of history for a leader still finding his footing.

England’s Batters Seize the Moment

England’s chase was built around standout batting performances. Jacob Bethell anchored the innings with an unbeaten knock of 76, while Harry Brook provided a rapid supporting burst, striking 39 runs off just 15 balls to accelerate the run rate. On the bowling side, India’s struggles were epitomised by Ravi Bishnoi, who leaked 29 runs in a single over — a costly moment that came on the same day as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated India debut.

With three matches still to play in the series, Iyer will be eager to turn the tide and register his first win as captain before the series concludes.
