Flash flooding in areas of southern England has led to a significant incident being announced in Somerset.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) has helped deploy in the Galhampton, North Cadbury and South Cadbury places following heavy showers on Tuesday.

Several houses had to be evacuated due to mudslides, and further flooding is likely, the Environment Agency said. The residents are being advised not to try to go through flood water in Southern England.

It was similar in other areas of England, with “torrential” precipitation in Devon driving dangerous driving conditions and damage to houses and companies. Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and Essex even saw heavy downpours, resulting in blocked lanes and delays to rail services.

A flood alert is in force for the River Brue and Glastonbury Millstream between Lovington and Highbridge, with low-lying properties at stake.

Commuters defined the roads through the villages of Podimore and Queen Camel as “impassable”. The village lobby in North Cadbury was opened to citizens impacted on Tuesday evening, and approximately 18 families are thought to have been forced to evacuate.

While flood alerts stay in place, all weather warnings for heavy rainfall have been raised. Hertfordshire Constabulary reported getting 999 calls due to vehicles being stuck on flooded roads on Tuesday night.
