Sunny Deol Embraces OTT Era, Promises Fresh Roles and Action with ‘Jaat’ and More
Following the blockbuster success of Gadar 2, veteran actor Sunny Deol is gearing up for a new chapter in his illustrious 42-year career. The action icon of the 1990s is now setting his sights on the digital world with upcoming projects in the OTT space, alongside his big-screen return in films like Jaat, Border 2, and Lahore 1947.
Deol, who became a household name with iconic roles in Ghatak, Arjun, and Damini, made a triumphant comeback in 2023 with Gadar 2 — a sequel to his 2001 classic Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The film’s roaring success re-established his popularity among audiences across generations.
Now, the 67-year-old star is looking to evolve with the times. In a recent interview, he revealed his plans to explore OTT platforms, which he believes are ideal for more niche stories and varied characters. “I’m doing a couple of projects for OTT, and they are not meant for the silver screen because the audience of that is niche,” Deol said. “It’s an interesting medium for actors and directors because it offers all kinds of variety.”
Deol emphasized that digital platforms have played a major role in keeping his earlier work alive and relevant, especially for younger audiences. “Those who didn’t see our films in cinema halls, they became relevant on digital platforms. Today’s generation got to see them. I thank God and everybody for loving us so much,” he added.
His upcoming theatrical release, Jaat, is scheduled to hit cinemas on April 10. The film is described as a high-octane action drama, directed by South Indian filmmaker Gopichand Malineni, known for hits like Don Seenu and Veera Simha Reddy. “It was a refreshing experience,” said Deol. “For the first time, I’m working with a South director, and we all learned so much from each other.”
Deol is also excited to take on new kinds of roles, but admits that depends heavily on what writers and directors bring to the table. “I’m looking into it… but if you try and look for it, then it becomes difficult,” he said, hinting at a more organic approach to his evolution as an actor.
With a strong lineup ahead, Sunny Deol is clearly not slowing down — he’s simply reinventing himself for a new era of storytelling.
