Todd Field’s film Tár, which recently won Best Film at the National Society of Film Critics, completed a rare hat-trick of triumphs this awards season.
Tár, directed by Todd Field, won Best Film at the lately announced National Society of Film Critics, capping a rare hat-trick of victories this awards season that also included Best Film wins from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association as well as New York Film Critics Circle.
In addition, actors Ke Huy Quan and Cate Blanchett won the best lead actress and supporting actor awards from these three organisations.
These critics’ circle awards greatly impact who the front-runners are in some of the big categories before the Academy Awards.
By winning Best Film at each of the three major critics’ awards—the National Society of Film Critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the New York Film Critics Circle—Todd Field’s Tár continued its successful streak at the critics’ circle awards.
In addition, Todd Field was awarded Best Screenplay, while Cate Blanchett, the lead actress, received the Lead Actress Award and Nina Hoss, the runner-up in the Supporting Actress category.
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car (2021), Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, and David Fincher’s The Social Network (2010) are a few recent examples of movies that have accomplished this feat of winning Best Film at all three critics’ awards (2009).
All of these movies received numerous nominations for Academy Awards, such as Best Picture and Best Director. Only one movie has ever won both Oscars: The Hurt Locker.
After winning the award for lead actress in Tár, Cate Blanchett is now considered the Best Actress front-runner.
She has previously been honoured with two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator in 2004, as well as Best Leading Actress for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine in 2013.
Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere All At Once also strengthened his grip on the Best Supporting Actor category by winning at the National Society of Film Critics.
Other winners included Colin Farrell and Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin, who took home the Best Lead Actor as well as Best Supporting Actress awards, respectively.
For her first major motion picture, Aftersun, Charlotte Wells won Best Director. While Poland’s EO won the best non-English film and best cinematography for Micha Dymek, Laura Poitras’ All the Beauty and also Bloodshed won best documentary.
