With this initiative, Tata Electronics will now have a presence in all three major semiconductor manufacturing segments. This strategic expansion positions Tata as a key player in India’s semiconductor industry, supporting the “Make in India” initiative and contributing to global supply chain resilience.

The collaboration aims to deliver comprehensive, end-to-end display semiconductor solutions, covering:

  • Chip design
  • Manufacturing and packaging
  • Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) for Indian and international markets

Himax Technologies Co-Founder and CEO Jordan Wu highlighted the partnership’s importance, stating, “Through this collaboration, we aim to bring Himax’s industry-leading expertise in display semiconductors and WiseEye ultra-low power AI sensing to support India’s manufacturing initiatives.”

Comparison with Vedanta’s Proposed Display Fab

While Vedanta Group had also proposed setting up a display fab in Gujarat, the project is yet to receive government approval. Tata Electronics, however, has moved ahead with its plans and has already established its semiconductor footprint in India.

Tata’s Ongoing Semiconductor Investments

Tata Electronics is also in the process of setting up a semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat with an investment of ₹91,000 crore, with PSMC as its technology partner. In addition, Tata is building a chip assembly and testing plant in Assam with an investment of ₹27,000 crore.

About PSMC and Its Role in the Project

Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) is the world’s seventh-largest pure-play semiconductor foundry, operating:

  • Four 12-inch fabs
  • Two 8-inch fabs in Taiwan
  • A production capacity of over 2.1 million 12-inch equivalent wafers annually

By partnering with PSMC and Himax, Tata Electronics is positioning itself as a leader in India’s semiconductor and display manufacturing industry, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub.
