Rifle malfunction prevents suspected mass shooting.
Authorities in Illinois have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of planning a violent attack on a Hindu temple in Aurora. The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, was taken into custody after his firearm reportedly jammed, preventing what investigators believe could have been a mass shooting.
Police say Paporakis had shared a manifesto filled with white supremacist and extremist rhetoric, including threats against individuals of South Asian descent. The document, titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto”, was discovered during the investigation, alongside tactical gear, ammunition, and body armour recovered from his residence.
The probe began when a co-worker reported Paporakis after he allegedly spoke about carrying out a mass shooting. He had told colleagues at Taco Bell that Sunday, October 11, would be “a special day.” Later that day, he phoned another co-worker, admitting his gun had jammed and that he fled quickly from the scene.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Palatine and Mount Prospect Police Departments, coordinated with the Aurora Police Department and the FBI to neutralize the threat. Officers detained Paporakis outside his home and subsequently searched the property, uncovering a rifle with a shortened barrel, multiple loaded magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Investigators believe the intended target was the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Aurora. In response, temple authorities have introduced heightened security measures, including armed guards on duty from 9 AM to 9 PM daily, to reassure devotees and staff.
The incident has sparked concern in the Hindu American community, particularly as it coincides with the Navaratri festive season. The Hindu American Foundation commended police for their swift action, urged vigilance, and emphasized that “every community deserves to worship without fear.”
Paporakis now faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. Authorities continue investigating whether they will file additional charges. While officials stress that no ongoing threat has been identified, the case underscores the persistent danger posed by extremist ideologies targeting minority communities.
This arrest follows recent acts of vandalism against Hindu places of worship in the United States, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections and community awareness. Law enforcement leaders have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding religious institutions, calling the alleged plot “a serious reminder of the importance of coordinated response.”
