Thailand authority has issued record breaking heat warning
Thailand authorities have warned people across the nation, including the capital Bangkok, to avoid heading outside due to the country’s record-breaking heat.
This comes as several parts of Asia are experiencing extreme heat this month, with high temperatures also being recorded in Bangladesh and India.
Extreme heat in Asia has also increased electricity usage, resulting in power outages and shortages for millions of people, according to the news agency Reuters.
According to the meteorological bureau, the temperature in Bangkok’s Bagna district reached 42 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have advised locals to stay away from joining in any outside activity. “Sometimes, I take refuge in the 7-11 convenience store… to escape the heat,” a Bangkok resident told Reuters.
Temperatures in at least 28 Thai provinces are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the coming week, according to Thailand’s disaster protection and mitigation department.
According to government spokeswoman Anucha Burapachaisri, the high heat has resulted in record usage of electricity, with the nation consuming more than 39,000 megawatts on April 6, breaking the previous record of 32,000 megawatts in April last year.
“What is happening now is caused by climate change, which is influencing abnormal (weather) and a phenomenon known as extreme weather,” specialist Mathinee Yucharoen told Reuters.
