The results of the elections highlight the party’s downward spiral in a state. That was once a significant source of its electoral strength—powering its two consecutive terms at the centre in 2004 and 2009.
The Congress was wiped out in Andhra Pradesh due to the state being split and losing Hyderabad.
The party won 19 assembly seats out of 117 in the 2018 Telangana elections. Uttam Kumar Reddy was elect MP and resigne as MLA in 2019. The following year, 12 MLAs defected to the ruling TRS. Which already had a landslide majority, leaving the Congress with only six seats.
The rebels split the legislative party, avoiding the consequences of the anti-defection law.
The Congress was humiliate when it lost its opposition party status in the legislature.
Munugode was a stronghold for the Congress before being won by Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy in 2018. Mr Reddy left the party and joined the BJP in August of this year.
Palvai Sravanthi, whose father had long serve the area, was chose by the Congress. They also hope that the 1.2 lakh female voters would back her up at a time when both the TRS and the BJP were seen betting big on liquor.
However, compared to the TRS and BJP, Congress had no money to spend. Its leadership was divide between the byelection and Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. Which passed through the state a week before the elections.
Even with the caveat that a bypoll cannot be use to predict an assembly election. The Congress appears to have lost the narrative of even being in the race to form the government in 2023, finishing a distant third in Munugode.
