Here are some names of temples of Southern India which were destroyed and then rebuilt again.
Navabrahma Temple:
Navabrahma Temple in Telangana, 1400 years old, was built by Badami chalukya between the 7th and 9th centuries.
There are 9 temples there, and they are dedicated to Lord Shiva, built in Nagara style. It was damaged during the Islamic invasion. Fort, mosque and graveyard were built there.
Indranarayanaswamy Temple:
Indranarayanaswamy Temple in Telangana’s Bodhan. Known as Deval Masjid nowadays.
The temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu, built by Rashtrakuta King Indra 3, and renovated by kings of the Chalukya Dynasty.
Until Muhammad Bin Tughlaq converted the temple into a mosque, and the idol in the garbhagrha was removed.
The Sriramgam Temple:
The Sriramgam Temple was attacked twice; first, it was attacked by Alauddin Khalji general Malik Kafur, and the second time by Alauddin Khalji’s brother Ulugh Khan.
Ulugh ordered the beheading of around 12,000 people who were present there during his attack.
Vishnu’s gold ideal was smashed, and the deity was reinstalled at Srirangam in the year 1371 by the Vijayanagara King.
Poysalesvara Udaiyanar temple:
Ulugh Khan pulled down the walls of the Poysalesvara Udaiyanar temple in Kanannur, near Trichy, and built a fortress for himself. He turned the temple into a mosque.
Kanchi and Farishta:
In the year 1481, the Bahmani ruler Muhammad Shah attacked two temples, Kanchi and Farishta, the Deccan soldier’s court historian describes that how the Deccan soldiers pillaged the Varadaraj Temple. And showed how they ended up a great Hindu monument.
The Madhuri Meenakshi Temple:
The Madhuri Meenakshi Temple of Tamil Nadu was heavily destroyed during the southern raids by the Delhi Sultanate under the rule of Muhammad bin Tughluq. The region became the local centre of sultans from 1334 to 1370.
Brihadiswara temple:
Along with this, the Brihadiswara temple in Thanjavur was highly affected when the East India Company created a garrison at the temple from 1771 to 1798.
It was under the garrison of the British for around 27 years. Later the Maratha ruler Sarfoji planned the purification ceremony.
Tirumala Tirupati Temple:
Even the most famous Tirumala Tirupati Temple was attacked under the rule of Abdullah Qutb Shah. A poet present during the incident described the dangerous situation in his poem.
The Guruvayoo temple:
The Guruvayoo temple was raided by Duth, who came in the year 1716. Several losses were faced as they looted its wealth, burned the western Gopuram and also stripped the gold Kodi Maram.
The Mammiyur Shiva Temple:
Later, The Mammiyur Shiva Temple situated in Kerala was destroyed by Tipu Sultan. Because of the fear of Tipu Sultan, the icon of Guruvayurappan was hidden or might be buried there.
For several years, the Temples of Southern India were attacked by them, yet some still stand with pride because of our warriors who sacrificed to save our gods.
