On Tuesday night, at Neelavanji village in Karnataka’s Raichur district, three migrant workers from Chhattisgarh were reportedly crushed to death by a JCB machine.

The victims, identified by the police as Vishnu (26), Shivaram (28) and Balaram (30), all natives of Chhattisgarh, were working as a team in a lorry digging a new borewell in the village of Neelavanji.

The three workers were sleeping on the edge of an agricultural field when the JCB driver reportedly ran over them, killing them instantly, according to police.

“The incident happened at three in the morning. Superintendent of police for Raichur B Nikhil stated to our source, “We have detained JCB owner Balaiah and driver Basappa. The families of the deceased have been notified, and their bodies have reportedly been transported for a postmortem, according to the police.

The defendants were formally charged at the Devadurga police station with violating Sections 279 (rash and negligent driving), 338 (causing severe harm by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the police, the JCB’s lack of a headlight caused the accident. They said the driver ran over the workers because they were sleeping.
