US reduce troops from Europe to deploy them against
China’s threats to south-eastern Asian countries.
On Thursday, the United
States of America
pitched itself in the ongoing border stand-off between India and China by removing its troops from Europe and deploying them in south-east Asia. In a
statement released, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that China’s threats to India and Southeast
Asia were among
the main reasons for moving the troops.
Pompeo told Brussels forum that
the decision to draw down troops in Germany was part of a well-thought out strategy and
they were being moved to different places. EU countries were angered recently
following the announcement that the US would be reducing troops from Germany,
by US President Donald Trump.
Pompeo cited conflict and malice in the actions of the Chinese Communist Party and considered it as “threats to India” and other South-eastern Asian countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Pompeo stated” We are going to make sure we are postured appropriately to counter the PLA. We think that is the challenge of our time and that we are going to make sure that we have resources in place to do that.”
Dialogue between the US and EU
on the Chinese threat:
Pompeo also revealed that the
US and EU will start a dialogue on China along with the challenges that come
with it. Pompeo said after a “bloody altercation with India” it is clear that
China has to be countered. The nation’s activities in the South China Sea and
its predatory policies have drawn both the EU and US’s attention and both could
take action together.
Pompeo flagged off “clean telcos” on Wednesday, which included companies that were
free of Chinese influence. Telefonica, Orange, Jio, Telstra and more companies
have been included in the list and Chinese Huawei has been excluded in the list.
