To fast in support of farmers today, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Key points:

  1.  The CM also encouraged his Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) members as well as supporters to join him.
  2. Allowing farmers to sell their product anywhere in the world, farmers say they will remove the MSP as well as the mandi system’s safety cushion.
  3. The leader of the farmers’ union said they would be sitting fast at the Singhu border from 8 am to 5 pm on December 14.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will conduct one-day fasting on Monday to help farmers protesting in the national capital towards farm legislation. The CM also encouraged his Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) members as well as supporters to join him.

As CM Kejriwal stated:

I call on all members of the Party (AAP) and people around the country to quickly observe tomorrow (Monday) for a day of solidarity towards protesting farmers. I’m going to observe a fast day too… Let’s help our farmers from our homes.

In a press conference on Monday, the chief minister said that this is not possible for most of us to be physically present at the (state) border points where the protesting farmers’ groups have gathered.

Kejriwal also called for the rolling back of the three controversial farm laws introduced by the government in September and the introduction of a new bill to guarantee minimum support prices (MSP) for farmers.

The three laws passed by Parliament:

In the midst of large-scale protests by the Opposition including farmers’ unions, the Parliament enacted three laws – the Farmers’ Produce Exchange and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance.

While the government claims that the laws will eliminate the intermediaries’ position, allowing farmers to sell their product anywhere in the world, farmers say they will remove the MSP as well as the mandi system’s safety cushion, because of that they will need to be at the hands of corporate leaders.

As the meeting took place:

A meeting was held between Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture, Som Parkash, Minister of State for Trade as well as Industry,

and Amit Shah, Minister of Home Affairs of the Union, to resolve the impasse that had entered its 19th day on Monday.

The leader of the farmers’ union said they would be sitting fast at the Singhu border from 8 am to 5 pm on December 14.
