Trump Administration to Relocate Space Command Headquarters to Alabama

The Trump administration is set to announce the relocation of U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Huntsville, Alabama, according to sources familiar with the decision. The announcement is expected as early as Tuesday.

The move would reverse a 2023 decision by the Biden administration, which had designated Colorado Springs as the permanent home for the military’s newest combatant command. Currently, about 1,700 personnel operate from Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs on an interim basis.

The decision appears to favor Alabama, a state that overwhelmingly supported Trump’s three presidential campaigns, over Colorado, which opposed them. However, the administration has not provided an official reason for the relocation.

Huntsville has strong credentials for hosting Space Command, serving as home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and major defense contractors including L3Harris and Lockheed Martin. The city has actively lobbied for the headquarters designation.

Defense officials estimate the relocation could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take several years to complete. Space Command, established in 2019 during Trump’s first term, manages military operations beyond Earth’s atmosphere and protects U.S. satellites from potential threats.
