Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey’s successor, Parag Agrawal, is 37 years old, the same age as Meta Platform Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Twitter Inc.’s new Chief Executive Officer, Parag Agrawal, is now the S& P 500’s youngest CEO, but only just.
Agrawal, who was named to succeed Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey on Monday, is 37 years old, the same age as Meta Platform Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Twitter refused to reveal Agrawal’s birth date, citing security concerns but confirmed he was born later in 1984 than Zuckerberg’s May 14 birthday. Dorsey, at 45, was already one of the dozen youngest CEOs in the group of the largest U.S. corporations.
“I don’t think age is such a big deal, especially for a company like this. It could be advantageous, “said David Larcker, a Stanford Graduate School of Business professor who studies CEO performance. “The fact that Dorsey is stepping down from the board, so he isn’t going to be a shadow CEO, shows that he has genuine faith in him.”
According to Bloomberg data, Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is the S& P 500’s oldest CEO at 91. According to the data, the average age of a CEO among the 500 largest companies was around 58 years. However, the overall trend in CEO age still does not favor youth. Data from executive recruiter Spencer Stuart on S& P 500 companies over the last two decades show a slight but steady increase in the age of the CEO.
In 2011, Agrawal joined Twitter. Dorsey will remain on the board of the San Francisco-based company until his term expires in 2022, according to a statement released by Twitter on Monday. Agrawal has also been appointed to the board, where he will be a statistical outlier. According to Spencer Stuart, the average age of an S& P 500 director is 63.
