Two US military choppers crashed in Kentucky

Several people are considered to have been killed after two US military choppers collided in Kentucky.

The incident concerned a helicopter from the 101st Airborne Division, which said it had “resulted in few casualties.”

The state’s Governor, Andy Beshear, spoke it was “tough news” and that “fatalities are anticipated”. Local press reports reveal the incident occurred around 21:35 local time (01:35 GMT), and as many as nine people may have died.

It occurred in Trigg County, near the extensive Fort Campbell military camp. In a report to the BBC, a US Army representative said two HH60 Blackhawk choppers had collided during “a routine training mission.”

“The position of the crew members is unknown at this time,” they stated. “The command is currently focused on caring for the service members and their families.”

Asked by the media if the two US military choppers had collided into each other, the representative said it “was unable to verify specifics at this time.”

They continued the incident was under probe and that more details would be released as they became available. The 101st Airborne Division is the sole air assault unit in the US Army and has been sent to war zones internationally.

According to the military, the HH-60 is a version of the Black Hawk helicopter made to support various military missions, including air raids and medical evacuations.
