UK train drivers on strike again over pay row

Attention train drivers: There is currently a strike happening, even on the day of the FA Cup final, due to an ongoing dispute over pay, according to the Aslef union.

In addition to the strike scheduled for June 3, the members will also be walking out on May 12 and May 31.

The latest action comes after the union rejected a new offer from 16 train companies, including a 4% pay rise over two years and changes to working conditions.

According to Aslef, around 13,000 drivers will participate in a three-day walkout.

Over the past few months, large-scale rail strikes have led to an anticipated significant disruption across many areas of the country’s railways.

Mick Whelan, the general secretary of Aslef, deemed the offer presented by the Rail Delivery Group to the union on Wednesday as “risible”. The proposal was from the train companies.

According to Mr Whelan, the proposal was not meant to be accepted as it needed to align with the high cost of living, which increased by over 10% in the year leading up to March. He believes that the employers’ inflexibility is to blame for their actions.

There will be a strike on May 12, before the Eurovision Song Contest final in Liverpool. Additionally, on June 3, numerous football fans will head to Wembley Stadium in London to watch the FA Cup final between rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.

On that day, drivers will strike at Avanti West Coast, the primary direct train service from Manchester to London, which means that most fans will have to travel by road.
