Bhagavad Gita, Natyashastra Inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register; PM Modi Calls it a Proud Moment

In a historic recognition of India’s rich cultural and philosophical heritage, the Bhagavad Gita and Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra have been inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. The announcement marks a significant international acknowledgment of the country’s timeless contributions to global thought and arts.

The Memory of the World Register is UNESCO’s initiative to preserve and promote documentary heritage of exceptional value. With the inclusion of these two foundational Indian texts, India now has 14 entries in the prestigious list.

Reacting to the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride, stating that the recognition is a tribute to India’s enduring wisdom and cultural depth.

“A proud moment for every Indian across the world! The inclusion of the Gita and Natyashastra in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is a global recognition of our timeless wisdom and rich culture. The Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra have nurtured civilisation and consciousness for centuries. Their insights continue to inspire the world,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came in response to a post by Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who first shared the news. He described the development as a “historic moment for Bharat’s civilisational heritage.”

“The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita & Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra are now inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. This global honour celebrates India’s eternal wisdom & artistic genius,” Shekhawat wrote. “These timeless works are more than literary treasures—they are philosophical and aesthetic foundations that have shaped Bharat’s worldview and the way we think, feel, live, and express.”

The Bhagavad Gita, a revered spiritual text composed as a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Prince Arjuna, is considered a cornerstone of Indian philosophy, ethics, and spiritual thought. With its teachings on duty, righteousness, and devotion, the Gita continues to influence global spiritual discourse.

On the other hand, the Natyashastra, authored by Bharat Muni, is a comprehensive treatise on drama, dance, and music. Dating back over 2,000 years, it is regarded as the foundational text of Indian classical arts, outlining not only performance techniques but also deep insights into aesthetics, emotions (rasa), and storytelling.

Both texts are widely acknowledged as cornerstones of India’s intellectual legacy, offering guidance that transcends time, geography, and culture. Their inclusion in the UNESCO register is being celebrated as a reaffirmation of India’s global cultural impact—and a moment of national pride.
