US Deploys Forces, Firepower to Deter Iran and Shield Israel

Amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, the United States has significantly increased its military presence across the Middle East, aiming to protect its interests and deter Iranian aggression. The Biden-Trump administration’s latest moves include the deployment of fighter jets, warships, and additional troops, signalling Washington’s readiness to respond if the conflict escalates further.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the heightened military activity, stating that the deployments are intended to “ensure that our people are safe.” The Pentagon has sent additional F-16 fighter jets, aerial refuelling tankers, and repositioned naval forces across key strategic points in the region.

President Donald Trump further raised eyebrows by declaring on social media, “We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran,” triggering widespread speculation about possible US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. However, US officials clarified that, as of Tuesday, no American aircraft had entered Iranian airspace and that all actions remain defensive in nature.

Aircraft and Arsenal in Place

A dozen F-16s have been relocated to Saudi Arabia, and US fighter jets are now conducting patrols across the Middle East. The Pentagon has also readied B-52 bombers at Diego Garcia, while B-2 stealth bombers—capable of carrying the 30,000-pound GBU-57 “bunker buster” bomb—remain on standby in the United States.

The GBU-57, officially known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, is one of the few weapons capable of striking deeply buried nuclear facilities like Iran’s Fordo site. “Only the US possesses both the aircraft and the munitions to carry out such a mission,” said a senior defence official.

Open-source intelligence group Aurora Intel has reported increased US Air Force activity across Europe, with additional assets stationed in England, Spain, Germany, and Greece—movements tracked via public aviation data and reported by the Associated Press.

Warships on Patrol

In the maritime domain, American destroyers such as the USS The Sullivans and USS Arleigh Burke have been actively intercepting Iranian missile threats aimed at Israel. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its strike group are currently stationed in the Arabian Sea, while the USS Nimitz is en route to either reinforce or rotate its presence. The USS Gerald R. Ford is also preparing to deploy to Europe, a move that, though pre-scheduled, expands US strategic options.

Troop Surge and Regional Readiness

The US troop presence in the region has surged to nearly 40,000—up from the typical 30,000—with some bases authorized to allow voluntary family evacuations. Bases remain on high alert following previous escalations, including drone and missile attacks from Iranian-backed groups.

Though officials emphasize the deployments are defensive, the enhanced readiness offers the US the flexibility to act swiftly should tensions with Iran boil over into direct conflict.
