Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said he was “not surprise” by Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as Test captain.

Virat Kohli’s decision, the captain of Team India, announced his decision to resign as captain of the Test team on Saturday. Just one day after India’s defeat to South Africa in the three-match Test series.

However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said he was “not surprise” by Kohli’s decision to step down as Test captain. The BCCI had previously replaced the 33-year-old as Team India’s white-ball captain while naming the squad for the current tour of South Africa.

“I’m not surprised in the least. But I had hoped it would appear at the presentation ceremony. However, it may have been motivate by resentment after losing the series. So, I think there’s a little bit of a gap, and the decision has come,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

Gavaskar also state that series defeats abroad are “not taken too kindly” by Indian board officials.

“As a captain, I know that board officials or the cricket-loving public do not well receive series defeats abroad. The captain is on the verge of being fire. That has happen in the past, and I’m pretty sure it could have happen again this time because India was expect to win easily. So, where the buck stops is with the captain,” he added.

Against the Proteas, which begins on January 19 in Paarl.
