WhatsApp for iPad Launches After Long Wait

WhatsApp Finally Launches iPad App with Multitasking and Full Feature Support

After years of user demand, WhatsApp has officially launched its long-awaited iPad app, marking a significant milestone for the Meta-owned messaging platform. With this release, WhatsApp brings its full suite of features to the larger screen, tailored specifically for iPadOS and its multitasking capabilities.

For over a decade, iPad users have had to rely on WhatsApp Web — a workaround that provided limited access to the messaging service through a browser. Unlike its smartphone counterpart, the web version lacked full functionality and often felt clunky. That changes today, as WhatsApp is now available to download directly from the App Store for iPad users worldwide.

The new iPad app delivers a familiar yet optimized experience for tablet users. It supports video and audio calls with up to 32 participants, uses both the front and rear cameras, and allows screen sharing during calls. It also fully leverages iPadOS multitasking features such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over — meaning users can chat while watching videos, check messages while writing emails, or stay on a video call while browsing the web.

Additionally, the app offers enhanced support for Apple accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. These integrations make messaging, navigating, and multitasking on iPad smoother and more productive, especially for users who rely on their tablet as a laptop replacement.

One of the standout features of WhatsApp for iPad is its use of Meta’s multi-device sync technology. This allows users to link the iPad app to their existing WhatsApp account — even if their iPhone isn’t nearby or powered on. All messages, media, and call data are end-to-end encrypted across linked devices, including iPhone, Mac, and now iPad. This ensures a seamless and secure user experience regardless of which device is being used.

Privacy has also been a focus of the iPad rollout. WhatsApp for iPad includes support for Chat Lock, a feature that lets users secure specific conversations behind Face ID or a passcode. This is especially useful in shared-device scenarios, where multiple family members might use the same iPad. With Chat Lock enabled, users can ensure that sensitive messages remain private even if the device is shared.

Meta acknowledged the demand for an iPad app had been one of the most common requests from users for years.

“This has been one of our most requested features,” the company said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to bring the full WhatsApp experience to iPad, making it easier than ever to stay connected with family and friends.”

While the initial release covers all the core messaging and calling features, Meta hinted that this is just the beginning. Future updates are expected to introduce even more functionality tailored to iPad users.

The official WhatsApp for iPad app is now available globally and can be downloaded from the App Store starting today. With this launch, WhatsApp completes its device ecosystem coverage, offering native apps for iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows — and now, finally, iPad.
