Before hordes of trolls called for a boycott of Bollywood films. Kamaal Rashid Khan aka KRK, was launching vicious attacks on new Hindi releases and the industry with alarming regularity. For over a decade, he has made disparaging remarks about movies. Belittled film personalities, and made false claims about the initiative on social media platforms.
KRK first gained public attention around the time of the release of his film Deshdrohi (2008). As he alternated between making outrageous also pompous statements. He not only played the protagonist, a supporter of migrant North Indians in Mumbai but also produced and wrote the story about the discrimination they face in the city. The film was bombed at the box office, was panned by critics. And, most importantly, was banned for two months by the Maharashtra government. Of course, this did not deter Khan.
The following year, in 2009, he became a contestant on Bigg Boss 3.
He quickly established himself as a film critic and, later, a trade analyst. He started using Twitter in February 2010 and his YouTube channel on May 25, 2013. These platforms became his vehicles for disseminating his mostly negative and scathing reviews. He frequently launched his tirade against the entertainment industry under the guise of studies and analysis. He called most of the upcoming films “disasters” long before they hit theatres. Mocked the actors who starred in them and never shied away from personal attacks.
The industry mainly chose to ignore his no-filter derogatory remarks. They even laughed about it. He has frequently claimed that he is more popular than Shah Rukh Khan, whom he regards as his primary “competitor.”
He recently referred to Akshay Kumar as a “dhoni (imposter). Apart from criticising his film, he referred to Vijay Deverakonda as “Vijay Anakonda” by distorting his name. He has targeted Karan Johar and Ranbir Kapoor, among others, over the years. He trashed Aamir Khan’s latest film, Laal Singh Chaddha, in several videos before its release. Similarly, before their theatrical runs, he declared Ek Villain Returns and Jugjugg Jeeyo flops. He has recently targeted other public figures, including cricketers. He blamed Anushka Sharma for her husband’s depression, cricketer Virat Kohli.
