For the longest time, the biggest elephant in the room has been whether or not BTS’s eldest member Kim Seokjin will serve in the military. The globally popular South Korean band and their company, Hybe Labels, have yet to address the looming issue. While the Bangtan Boys’ fate is in the hands of their parliament.
BTS surprised fans all over the world when they announced that they will be taking a break from group activities. The unexpected decision has reignited debate about mandatory military service in the country that has been setting global pop-culture trends. Led by BTS, now known as the world’s biggest boyband.
Military service is highly contentious in South Korea. Where all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 are expected to serve for about two years as part of efforts to defend against a hostile North Korea. Exemptions have been granted to specific categories of men over the years. Including men who win a medal at the Olympics and Asian Games. As well as classical musicians and dancers who win a top prize at certain competitions.
Globally recognised K-pop stars were allowed to postpone their service until the age of 30 under a 2019 law revision.
The outcome of the parliament debates will have far-reaching consequences for BTS. Particularly for the band’s oldest member, stage name Jin. The band’s management company has long portrayed the seven BTS members. As eager to do their duty, but Jin’s time is running out. The 29-year-old vocalist has put off his service as long as he can and is facing the prospect of a full stint. Which would mean two years away from the public eye – when he turns 30 in December this year.
