A social media post of Tipu Sultan lead protest in Kolhapur

Tensions erupted in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur following protests over an allegedly offensive social media post involving 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan, according to PTI.

Some communities had called for a ‘Kolhapur bandh’ in protest of residents accused of using image of Tipu Sultan with an inappropriate ‘audio’ message on their social media pages. According to another story by Hindustan Times’ sister website Live Hindustan, residents had put up posters in favour of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.

Some right-wing activists gathered at Shivaji Chowk to demonstrate. According to authorities, the crowd dispersed following the demonstration. They were, however, attacked by miscreants who flung stones at them, according to Kolhapur Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit.

In a video published by PTI, police officers were seen using force to disperse the crowd. Dipak Kesarkar, a Maharashtra guardian minister, announced that action had been taken against people who misappropriated Tipu Sultan’s image in the social media post.

“An additional deployment has been completed. So far, 21 persons have been detained. “The situation is now under control,” Pandit told ANI.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, urged people not to take the law into their own hands.

“No one who takes the law into their own hands will be spared.” I’ve spoken with the local authorities, and the instructions have been delivered. “The welfare of the common man is our top priority,” the chief minister added, urging citizens to work with the local administration to keep the peace.
