Bajaj Auto Talks about the Future of CNG

Bajaj Auto Ltd., India’s leading manufacturer of auto rickshaws, has made a significant leap in sustainable transportation by introducing the world’s first compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered motorcycle, the Bajaj Freedom.

This innovative sports motorcycle aims to provide an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional petrol and diesel-powered bikes.

Product Launch by Bajaj Auto and Orders:

The Bajaj Freedom, equipped with a 124 cubic capacity engine, was launched earlier this month with a starting price of ₹95,000 (approximately $1,135). The company has already received around 6,000 orders for the new model, and 100 bikes have been delivered to customers.

According to Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, the potential market for Freedom includes millions of price-conscious consumers across India seeking more affordable and greener transportation options.

Advantages of CNG Vehicles:

CNG vehicles offer several advantages over traditional fuel vehicles, including lead- and sulfur-free, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

They also operate more quietly, contributing to lower noise pollution. In India, CNG is cheaper than petrol and diesel due to its high domestic production levels, and its lower energy density may require more frequent refueling.

Expansion Plans by Bajaj Auto:

Bajaj initially launched Freedom in states with high CNG infrastructure, such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Delhi metropolitan area. The bike is now available for orders nationwide.

Bajaj also plans to introduce Freedom in international markets where CNG is a popular alternative fuel, including countries like Argentina, Venezuela, Nigeria, and Tanzania, though specific timelines were not provided.

Market Position and Future Developments:

While Bajaj Auto dominates the auto-rickshaw market in India, it ranks fourth in the scooter segment, behind competitors such as Hero Motocorp Ltd., Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt., and TVS Motor Company Ltd., with a market share of around 12%.

The introduction of the CNG-powered Freedom motorcycle marks a pivotal moment for the industry. Sharma notes that other competitors are also exploring the development of CNG two-wheelers.
