BCCI Awards Mix-Up: Rohit Sharma Snubbed as Gill Named Champions Trophy Captain

The BCCI Naman Awards 2026 celebrated the finest moments of Indian cricket, honouring players across men’s, women’s, and under-19 teams. However, the ceremony was overshadowed by a glaring on-screen error that left fans fuming across social media.

During a segment featuring India’s captains, the broadcast displayed Shubman Gill’s designation as “Winning Captain, ICC Champions Trophy 2025” — a title that rightfully belongs to Rohit Sharma, who led India to victory over New Zealand in the final. Gill was part of the squad but was later appointed as the new ODI captain ahead of the Australia tour, where both Rohit and Virat Kohli played under his leadership.

Awards and Recognitions

Shubman Gill took home the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for the second time, recognising his stellar performances during the 2024–25 season. Smriti Mandhana was honoured as the Best International Cricketer for a record fifth time. Cricket legends Roger Binny, Rahul Dravid, and Mithali Raj received the Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for their outstanding contributions to Indian cricket.

Five Trophy-Winning Teams Celebrated

The ceremony also celebrated India’s remarkable run of international success, acknowledging five trophy-winning squads — the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, the 2025 U-19 Women’s World Cup, the 2026 Men’s U-19 World Cup, and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Despite the broadcast blunder drawing significant backlash online, the event remained a fitting tribute to Indian cricket’s golden era.
