Industry apologies follow small film’s big success.
Bollywood producer Anupriya Nagar has revealed how the devotional drama Hanuman Ansh overcame industry scepticism to become a box-office phenomenon. Initially dismissed by many for its modest budget and untested talent, the film has now prompted apologies from producers who once refused to support it.
At just 21, Nagar co-produced the project alongside director Vishal Chaturvedi, who was making his debut. With newcomer ShobinawSatyaa in the lead, the film faced resistance during post-production when the team sought financial backing. “We approached several people for investment, but no one agreed, even though the amount wasn’t very large,” Nagar recalled. The hesitation stemmed from doubts about the film’s scale, its first-time director, and relatively unknown cast.
Despite limited support, the film was released and quickly defied expectations. Made on a budget of under ₹2 crore, Hanuman Ansh went on to gross ₹331.70 crore in India, a staggering achievement for a small production. Nagar explained that this success dramatically shifted industry attitudes. “Lots of producers have reached out. Some even apologised, saying, ‘We regret not joining you. That was our biggest mistake,’” she said.
The producer noted that the film’s performance has sparked reflection within Bollywood. Several industry members admitted the project had taught them a valuable lessonthat small films with fresh talent can achieve extraordinary results. “They told us, ‘You’ve shown us what a small film can do. You’ve taught the industry a lesson,’” Nagar shared.
Despite the earlier rejection, Nagar holds no resentment. “I don’t blame them because it was a very small film,” she said, emphasising that the journey itself has been rewarding.
Directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh draws inspiration from the life of Neem Karoli Baba, exploring themes of faith, devotion, compassion, and selfless service. Its runaway success has not only elevated its creators but also challenged Bollywood’s long-standing reliance on big budgets and star power.
The film’s trajectory, from overlooked project to blockbuster hit- underscores a broader shift in the industry. It highlights how audiences increasingly embrace authentic storytelling, regardless of scale, and how perseverance can turn rejection into recognition.
