Bumrah Puts Young Sooryavanshi Through the Wringer

Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback to the Indian dressing room brought with it an unmistakable reminder of his class, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was among the first to feel it firsthand. As India geared up for the opening T20I against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Bumrah bowled an extended, high-intensity spell that had the young opener searching for answers against pace, seam movement, and pinpoint changes of length.

A Different Kind of Challenge

The net session carried extra intrigue given the duo’s earlier meeting. Sooryavanshi had famously taken Bumrah on without fear during an IPL encounter earlier in the year, striking him for boundaries in confident fashion. But facing him in a focused net session proved to be an entirely different test. Bumrah repeatedly beat the youngster’s bat with well-directed deliveries, followed up with a searing yorker that Sooryavanshi could barely dig out, and then found the edge with a well-disguised back-of-a-length ball.

Bumrah Signals Return to Peak Form

Beyond the duel with Sooryavanshi, Bumrah’s session was significant for what it signalled about his own fitness. Recovering from a knee injury, he bowled with clear intent and troubled several other batters in the squad, including Arshdeep Singh and Shreyas Iyer, suggesting he is close to full match sharpness ahead of the series opener.

For Sooryavanshi, the examination in the nets offered a valuable, if humbling, glimpse into the demands of international-level cricket. Facing sustained pressure and precision from one of the game’s finest fast bowlers is likely to serve him well as he continues his rapid rise through the ranks, with India’s clash against Afghanistan now just around the corner.
