The central government has announced Rs 1,951 crore in disaster relief assistance for flood-affected Maharashtra and Karnataka. Home Minister Amit Shah approved the advance release of Rs 1,950.8 crore as the second installment of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) for 2025-26. Of this allocation, Karnataka will receive Rs 384 crore while Maharashtra will get Rs 1,566 crore to address immediate relief needs for populations impacted by severe monsoon rainfall and catastrophic floods during the southwest monsoon season.

Government Commitment to Disaster Response

The government emphasized its complete commitment to assisting flood-affected states. Besides the SDRF allocation, significant support has been mobilized across multiple relief mechanisms this monsoon season. The Centre has released Rs 13,603 crore to 27 states under SDRF and an additional Rs 2,189 crore to 15 states through the National Disaster Relief Fund. Complementing these financial measures, Rs 4,571 crore was distributed from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to 21 states, while Rs 372 crore was allocated from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to nine states.

Operational Support and Rescue Efforts

Extensive Rescue and Relief Operations Underway

Beyond financial assistance, the government has provided comprehensive logistic support to affected regions. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed 199 teams across 30 states and union territories, reaching unprecedented deployment levels this monsoon. Armed forces, including Army teams and Air Force units, have been mobilized to complement rescue and relief operations. These coordinated efforts aim to minimize casualties, prevent displacement, and facilitate rapid recovery in severely impacted areas across Maharashtra and Karnataka during this critical monsoon period.
