Coffee Is Good For Liver Health, According To A Large Study.

According to a new study, drinking more than three cups of caffeinated coffee a day is associated with less liver problems.

This study is perhaps the most rigorous study of the benefits of coffee on liver health in the United States to date. This is based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey data, which asks what they eat and drink.

“This is the closest we have to the relationship between what people eat or drink. Their liver health in the absence of the longitudinal studies we’ve been trying to track people for years,” said Elliott Tapper. MD, assistant professor from gastroenterology at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study. The researchers examined data from about 4,500 patients who took part in the study from 2017 to 2018. Participants aged 20 years or older, with a median age of 48; 73% are overweight, roughly the national average.

The researchers found no connection between coffee consumption also fatty liver size. But they found a link between coffee also liver stiffness. Who drink 3 cups of coffee in a day had lower levels of liver stiffness, measured in something called kilopascals. Liver stiffness of more than 9.5 kilopascals is a sign of liver fibrosis, leading to cirrhosis.

Tapper said the data was reassuring for doctors advising patients to drink coffee.

“There are hepatologists around the world who actively recommend coffee — they will feel empowered by this data,” he says. “However, I would like to see more … data before I spend my precious time advising patients about coffee. There are many other data-driven interventions to treat the liver disease that we need to focus on.”

However, these data are essential for patients who are very interest in natural remedies.

“For patients who are very interested in taking natural supplements to feel like they play an active role in their liver health. I would tell them to avoid carbs and increase their exercise – and coffee is good to incorporate into their daily routine. A study based on a British database found that coffee appears to protect against chronic liver disease. Says Professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Liver and Digestion at University College London.
