Cops injured in Cardiff riots after two boys died in a car crash

Two teenage lads died in a crash before a riot broke out in Cardiff, which left several police officials wounded.

Cars were lit, and fireworks were tossed at police as 100 to 150 people assembled at the scene in Ely on Monday.

Cardiff Police ignored social media rumours that they were concerned about the crash, saying officials came to the scene later. The connection between the collision and the disorder was unclear, South Wales police and crime commissioner confirmed.

“It would seem that there were words, and those rumours became rampant, of a police chase – which wasn’t the issue,” Alun Michael stated. “And I think it shows the rate with which rumours can go around with the activity on social media nowadays – and that circumstances can get out of hand.”

Mr Michael said up to 12 officials had been injured in the riots.

South Wales Police confirmed it was called to the place of the deadly collision on Snowden Road soon after 18:00 BST on Monday. At about 20:00 BST, police wrote that they were working to handle the crash and de-escalate ongoing riots at the scene.

The police said it received numerous calls from “understandably frightened” locals.

By 01:10 BST on Tuesday, cops said several cars had been lit, and people were being arrested.
