CSK Honors 21 Years Since Dhoni’s Maiden ODI Century Against Pakistan

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) took to social media on Sunday, April 5, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of MS Dhoni’s maiden ODI century. The franchise shared throwback images from Dhoni’s stunning 148-run knock against Pakistan, captioning the post: “Throwback to that Tuesday! 21 years ago, Thala scored his first international century!” The innings helped Sourav Ganguly’s India post a commanding total of 356 runs, which they successfully defended to go 2-0 up in the series.

Ganguly’s Bold Call That Changed Everything

The innings would never have happened without a crucial decision by then-captain Sourav Ganguly. In a candid interview on Breakfast With Champions, Ganguly revealed that Dhoni had been batting at No.7 in his early matches. On the morning of the Vizag game, Ganguly made a snap decision to promote the youngster to No.3. “We’ll see what the result is,” Ganguly reportedly told himself. Dhoni, who was sitting in shorts expecting to bat low in the order, was stunned by the promotion — and repaid his captain’s faith with a match-defining century.

A Career That Defined a Generation

The innings launched one of cricket’s most celebrated careers. Dhoni went on to score 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs and guided India to three iconic title wins — the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He also led India to the top of the ICC Test rankings in 2009. Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020, leaving behind an unmatched legacy as one of the game’s greatest leaders.
