Cyclone Burevi, IMD declares a red alert for four districts.

Quite near to Kerala is the Cyclonic Storm Burevi. Burevi is quite likely to travel west-northwestward as well as emerge into the Gulf of Mannar near the Mannar coast within the next three hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin on Thursday morning.

Cyclonic Burevi centred:

On December 03, Cyclonic Storm Burevi has centred at 0530 hrs IST over Sri Lanka near Lat. N and Long, 9.0 °. 80.3° E, approximately 40 km east of Mannar (in the Alappuzha area of Kerala), 120 km east-southeast of Pamban (India), and 320 km east-northeast of Kanniyakumari (India),’ said the IMD newsletter at 8:30 am.

Reports by bulletin: 

At around noon on December 03, the Cyclonic Storm with wind speeds of 70-80 raging to 90 kmph will be very close to Pamban,” it added.”

 By night and early Friday morning, it is likely to cross the south coast of Tamil Nadu between Pamban as well as to Kanyakumari.

 

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said:

On Wednesday, as many as eight National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams including Air Force as well as Navy personnel were deployed for rescue and relief operations ahead of the cyclone’s landfall, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated.

In total, in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, 26 relief teams have been dispatched, and one team is on reserve in Puducherry, the NDRF stated. Nearly 700 individuals from 175 families were transferred to relief camps, while 2,489 other camps were identified.

Red Alert in other districts: 

In view of cyclone Burevi, the IMD issued a red warning for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta including Alappuzha for December 03.

PM with talk with CM of Kerala and Tamil Nadu: 

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala Wednesday and addressed the situation prevailing in parts of the states as a result of the incoming cyclone while promising the Centre all possible help.

PM Modi in his Tweet: 

We also addressed the conditions prevailing due to Cyclone Burevi in parts of the state. The Centre will provide TN with all necessary assistance. I pray for the well-being and welfare of those living in the affected areas,’ tweeted PM Modi.

As per weather department officials:

The Maldives-named Cyclone Burevi will not be as intense as the Nivar Cyclone that struck Tamil Nadu’s northern coast last week, officials from the weather department said. Unlike Nivar, which had a rate of 110-130 km/hour, they told the storm was supposed to have a speed of 80-90 km/hour.
