Five illegal film studios demolished by BMC in Mumbai

The demolition of five film studios in Madh-Marve began on Friday after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave an order considering them illegal.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) began demolishing film studios in the Madh-Marve region of Mumbai after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave the order to consider them illegal.

These studios had misused approvals and constructed permanent facilities instead of temporary ones.

BJP head Kirit Somaiya, the whistle-blower in the issue, lashed out at BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, proclaiming he knew the studios were illegal but didn’t act. He accused the prior Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government under Uddhav Thackeray had given unlawful approval of the name of temporary studios.

The NGT, in its order, said they found the permission was only for fixing up a temporary structure for the aim in question. Nevertheless, the film studios had made immense structures in which much steel and concrete material was used.

“In our check, such structures cannot be kept to be temporary by their size and the material utilised. However, the studios argued these structures were made using eco-friendly materials and should be treated as provisional. We are not in accord with this argument and find that these types of structures show a breach of the grant of temporary permission,” said the order by NGT.
