Germany has considered barring specific components from Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE in its telecoms networks.

Germany’s Interior Ministry is investigating all Chinese components already established in the nation’s 5G network, Minister Nancy Faeser said on Sunday, as Berlin re-evaluates its relationship with leading trade partner China.

“We have to defend our communication networks,” Faeser told Bild am Sonntag news agency, adding that the examination’s three importance were determining risks, preventing dangers and avoiding dependencies. “This is primarily true for our vital infrastructure,” she said.

Germany has been considering restricting specific components from Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE in its telecoms networks, a country source told the press last month, in a potentially vital move to handle security concerns.

The German government has been suspicious of expressly singling out Huawei. Still, there are worries that such firms’ close ties to Beijing’s security services mean that implanting them in the mobile networks of the fate could give Chinese spies and saboteurs key to critical infrastructure.
