Google Gets Tougher on Remote Work: Return to Office or Take Severance, Says New Policy

Google is taking a stricter stance on remote work in the United States, asking employees in key departments to return to the office or voluntarily exit the company with a severance package. In a recent internal memo accessed by Business Insider, the tech giant outlined its expanded return-to-office (RTO) policy, specifically targeting teams within Core, Marketing, Research, Knowledge & Information (K&I), and Communications.

The K&I group, in particular, plays a critical role, overseeing major products such as Google Search, commerce, and advertising. Employees working in these units who currently operate remotely—but reside within 50 miles of a Google office—are now being required to adopt a hybrid work schedule. This means being physically present in the office for at least three days a week.

While Google first introduced a hybrid work model in 2022, this new move reinforces the company’s commitment to in-person collaboration. The latest policy underscores that those who cannot or do not want to comply with the updated work expectations may opt for a voluntary exit, which includes a severance package. Google emphasized that this should not be viewed as a round of layoffs, but rather as an opportunity for individuals to reassess their alignment with the company’s future goals.

A company spokesperson confirmed that this voluntary exit option has already been tested in other parts of the organisation with “positive outcomes.” According to the memo shared by a senior executive, the push for a more office-centric model is closely tied to the company’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and other fast-evolving tech sectors.

The leadership believes that in-person collaboration fosters innovation and deeper alignment—both essential at a time when Google is repositioning itself to lead in AI and other strategic areas. “Being in the same space drives better teamwork and faster decision-making,” the memo noted.

However, the news has stirred anxiety among some employees. Historically, voluntary exits at Google have been followed by layoffs. In 2023, the company eliminated approximately 12,000 jobs globally. Earlier this year, smaller workforce reductions were carried out in departments such as Treasury and Business Services.

Although Google insists this is not a layoff, the undertone is clear: return to office or consider stepping aside. While no specific number of employees has been announced as affected, the policy signals that Google is tightening control over remote work flexibility, aiming to re-energize its workforce and streamline its priorities.

As the tech industry continues to balance productivity with workplace flexibility, Google’s decision could set a tone for others navigating similar hybrid work transitions.
