Government slams Rahul Gandhi, says ‘Shameless manner’ and should apologise

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh criticised Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha for his comments and said the ex-Congress chief must apologise.

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the UK regarding “Indian democracy coming undone” activated a new flashpoint in parliament today. As the ruling BJP insisted on his apology, the Congress blamed it for trying to divert emphasis from the Adani-Hindenburg row.

Soon after MPs gathered for the second stage of the Budget session, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh criticised Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha for his comments and said the ex-Congress chief must apologise.

“Rahul Gandhi, who is a member of this House, humiliated India in London. I insist that all members of this House criticise his statements, and he should be asked to apologise to the country,” said Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha.

In Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said it was “scandalous” that a senior leader had offended India’s democracy on foreign soil.

Some other BJP ministers echoed the demand as the Congress struck back, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised past governments abroad. Opposition MPs opposed at the centre of the House. The mess led to an adjournment of the Lok Sabha.

At a morning conference, top BJP leaders reportedly chose that party MPs would vehemently oppose Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in both houses.

PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and other Union Ministers, Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi and Anurag Thakur, attended the meeting.
