Gujarat Drowning Incident: Eight Dead in Meshwo River

In a heart-wrenching incident on Friday evening, at least eight people drowned while bathing in the Meshwo River in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar district.

The victims, all residents of Vasna Sogthi village in Dehgam taluka, tragically lost their lives near their village, according to an official report.

Details of the Meshwo River Incident:

Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) B. B. Modiya provided more information, stating that the unfortunate event occurred because the group misjudged the depth of the river.

He mentioned that the water level had risen due to a nearby under-construction check dam. “We have recovered eight bodies from the river. Since it is unclear how many people went into the water, the search is still ongoing,” SDM Modiya added.

Rescue Efforts:

Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams arriving at the scene. NDRF Team Commander Lakhan Raghuvanshi stated, “Eight bodies have been recovered, and according to the villagers, one person is still missing.

A team of divers is carrying out the rescue operation.”

The ongoing efforts are being supervised closely to ensure the recovery of any remaining individuals who might have entered the water.

Response from Authorities on Meshwo River Incident:

The tragic event has prompted responses from senior officials, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a genuine message on X (formerly Twitter), Shah expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the news that eight youths of Vasna Soghathi village drowned in the river.

May the departed souls rest in peace, and I pray that God gives strength to the families in their moment of grief.”
