As Gujarat endeavors to establish itself as a prominent semiconductor hub, the state’s Education Department is actively contributing to overcome the industry’s manpower shortage.
In a significant move, the department is slated to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in semiconductors at LD Engineering College (LDCE) and the Government Engineering College (GEC), Rajkot.
Education Department Role in Gujarat Semiconductor Dream:
This initiative forms part of the broader strategy by the Education Department to set up 8 CoEs across various government engineering colleges in Gujarat.
These centers will specialize in emerging engineering domains such as Artificial Intelligence and Drone Technology, aiming to meet the evolving demands of the industry.
Centre of Excellence in Gujarat Semiconductor: A Strategic Move:
Following the tendering process initiated by the department, two agencies have shown keen interest in establishing the CoE in semiconductors.
Final decisions are expected post the conclusion of state polling on May 7. Each CoE has been allocated a budget of Rs 3 crore, underscoring the state’s commitment to fostering excellence in semiconductor technology.
The proposed CoE for semiconductors aligns with a broader vision to establish state-of-the-art facilities in this domain. The Education Department has forwarded the proposal to the state government’s Science and Technology Department, awaiting approval.
The substantial investment underscores the significance attached to nurturing talent and infrastructure in semiconductor technology.
LD Engineering College and GEC Rajkot:
LD Engineering College (LDCE) emerges as a natural choice for housing one of the CoEs, given its strategic location and status as one of Gujarat’s oldest government engineering colleges.
This positioning ensures proximity to burgeoning semiconductor industries, facilitating seamless collaboration and resource utilization.
Implications for Industry and Research:
With the semiconductor industry primarily concentrated around Ahmedabad, the establishment of the CoE holds dual significance. Not only will it offer short-term courses to skill the workforce, but it will also serve as a hub for cutting-edge research in semiconductor technology. This collaborative platform will foster innovation, benefiting both academia and industry stakeholders.
By structuring the CoE to accommodate practical semiconductor-related activities, the Education Department aims to equip students with hands-on experience, ensuring industry relevance and employability.
