Gunfire and explosions all over Sudan, Africa, as paramilitary and army clash

Gunfire and blasts have been heard in the Sudanese capital, Africa, Khartoum, after days of uncertainty between infamous paramilitary troops and the nation’s army.

The dispute revolves around a proposed transition to civilian control.

The media reports that gunfire has been heard close to the military’s base in the city centre. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) states it has taken rule of the airport and presidential palace.

These assertions have not been confirmed.

Earlier, the RSF had stated that one of its headquarters in south Khartoum, Africa had been shot. The military said RSF soldiers have been trying to take the military headquarters.

“Fighters from the Rapid Support Forces battered several military camps in Khartoum and elsewhere around Sudan,” the AFP news agency quotes army representative Brig Gen Nabil Abdallah.

“Conflicts are ongoing, and the military is carrying out its duty to protect the nation.”

The media news agency also mentions witnesses stating there was gunfire in the northern city of Merowe. Alarabyia TV is revealing photos of smoke rising from a military base there, Reuters says.

Generals have been handling the nation through what is called the Sovereign Council since a coup in October 2021.

The RSF is controlled by the council’s vice-president Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Meanwhile, the military is led by Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sovereign Council.
